What is the American Dream? It is a complicated question, but a new survey from the Archbridge Institute sheds some light on how people think about the American Dream. While each of us is primarily responsible for achieving our American Dream, state policymakers can make it easier by reforming policies that restrict opportunity.
The key finding from Archbridge’s fifth edition of the survey is that 67% of respondents believe they have achieved or are on their way to achieving the American Dream. This is down from a high of 80% in 2022, but still shows a strong majority of Americans are confident about their ability to achieve the American Dream.
But what is the American Dream? According to respondents, the five most important pieces of the American Dream are: freedom of choice in how to live (97% said essential or important), having a good family life (96%), retiring comfortably (96%), owning a home (94%), and having a successful career (93%). Only 74% said becoming wealthy is essential or important to the American Dream.
